What is The Battle of the Books?
This is a voluntary reading competition for 5th graders. The youth librarians at RHPL have selected a list of twelve highly acclaimed, award-winning books from a variety of genres and reading levels.
Teams of 5th graders with a coach or coaches read the books and prepare for the Battle in March.
The day of the actual Battle, teams will gather in a school gymnasium (location TBA), and sit in an assigned spot, where there will be a clip board with 50 answer sheets and pencils provided. Librarians will ask 50 questions about the 12 books, and teams will work together to answer the questions. All answers will be the title and author of a book.
There will be an award ceremony the following week where every team will be announced and applauded. There will be awards presented for
Steps for participating in Battle of the Books
Step 1: Form a team of 3-5 5th graders. The only qualifications for team member:
Step 4: Start working on a team name, no more than 14 characters (including spaces) and team attire for the day of the Battle.
Step 5: Decide who is going to read which books. The teams that have each member read most of the books are more likely to earn a high score.
Step 6: Read, read, take notes, read some more.
Step 7: Come up with some of your own practice questions and start prepping for The Battle. (see the sample question sheet available at www.rhpl.org)

- Best Team Attire
- Best Sportsmanship
- Top 3 scoring teams
Steps for participating in Battle of the Books

- Must live in Rochester, Rochester Hills, or Oakland Township or be enrolled in a school in Rochester
- Must be willing to read at least one new book
- Must be in 5th grade
- Must have graduated from high school.
- Must be willing to read some really great kids’ books.
- Must be ready to let the students lead the team while you guide them and keep them on track.
